Starting a new job comes with many questions, and one of them is: what personal data does your employer have the right to ask for? While certain information is necessary for signing the contract and legal registration, there are also details that you should not disclose, even if requested.

🔹 What Information Is Mandatory?

For an employer to hire and register you with the relevant institutions, they must request some basic details:

✔️ Full name – to identify you as an employee

✔️ Residential address – for administrative and tax purposes

✔️ Personal identification number (EMBG) – for registration with the Health and Pension Insurance Fund

✔️ Bank account details – for salary payments

✔️ Proof of education or qualifications – if relevant to the job position

✔️ Health certificate – only if legally required for the job (e.g., food industry, transportation, healthcare)

📝 Important: Employers can process this data only to fulfill legal obligations and must not use it for any other purpose without your consent.

🚫 What Information Cannot Be Requested?

Although some companies may try to “learn more” about their employees, there are certain types of information that employers are not allowed to request, as doing so would violate privacy laws:

Marital status or family planning – whether you are married, have children, or plan to have them is not the employer’s concern

Political or religious beliefs – employers have no right to ask about your personal convictions

Medical history – unless directly relevant to the job (e.g., whether you can safely perform physical tasks)

Biometric data (fingerprints, facial recognition) – unless you provide explicit consent and its use is justified

Private social media accounts – employers cannot demand access to your personal Facebook, Instagram, or other social media profiles

🔹 If you are asked for any of this information, you have the right to refuse and request an explanation of why it is needed.

🔐 How Should Your Data Be Protected?

Even when employers collect legitimate data, they must protect it in accordance with the GDPR. This means:

✔️ Only authorized personnel (HR department, accounting) should have access to your data

✔️ Your data must not be stored longer than necessary (e.g., payroll records must be kept for a certain period but not indefinitely)

✔️ Sensitive data (such as health information) must be subject to additional security measures

💡 Conclusion:

During the hiring process, employers have the right to request certain information about you, but that doesn’t mean you should disclose all personal data they ask for.
